U of T named one of Canada’s Top Family-Friendly Employers for 2013

December 10, 2012

U of T has been named one of Canada's Top Family-Friendly Employers for 2013.

Like many individuals across the University, Kaye Francis, Manager of U of T's Family Care Office was pleased with announcement.

"U of T strives to be a family-friendly employer in many ways - through our policies and guidelines and our benefit plans, but also through services like the Family Care Office that are here to support our faculty, staff and students."

"There are many people who work so hard throughout the year to support our employees. It is great to be publicly recognized in this way."

The positive news was warmly received across the University, in particular by the working committee which submitted the award application in May.

"Ensuring U of T has a family-friendly workplace is at the heart of much of what we do," notes Rosie Parnass, U of T's Quality of Work-Life Advisor, and like Kaye, a member of the committee. "It is integral to our mission to be an employer of choice so that we continue to attract and retain top faculty and staff. Our commitment to this mission throughout the university enabled us to find many examples for our award submission."

Canada's Top Family-Friendly Employers is an annual competition run by Mediacorp Canada Inc. in partnership with the Globe and Mail. U of T was recently named as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers and one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers for 2013.

Among the reasons cited for U of T's award:

  • Maternity leave top-up payments; Parental leave top-up for new fathers; Parental leave top-up for adoptive parents (Note: All of U of T's maternity and parental leave top-up benefits apply to same-sex partners);
