10 things to know about applying to U of T
Thank you for your interest in applying to the University of Toronto.
The following are some helpful tips to assist you in sending in your application.
- U of T has a variety of employee groups, and certain groups may apply for positions at certain times. Here is a summary of what job section you should be checking:
- If you do not currently work for the University – you are only eligible for jobs on the External board.
- If you are currently employed at the University and are a member of the USW staff-appointed union – you are only eligible for jobs on the USW board, or for non-USW positions on the Internal board.
- If you work for the University and are not a member of the USW staff-appointed union – you are only eligible for jobs on the Internal board.
- Read the job description carefully. The description will outline the location of the position (St. George, Mississauga or Scarborough), the hiring department, whether the job is unionized and the salary range. It will also mention any special aspects of the jobs, such as whether it is a continuing position (with no predetermined end date), a term position (with an initial appointment of at least six months and a predetermined end date) or a part-time position (less than 100 per cent of the full-time hours of work).
- Please note that many positions list minimum qualifications (based on education and experience) that a candidate must meet to be considered for the position. Pay careful attention to key words such as “must have”, or “is an asset”, which indicates the importance placed on that skill/experience/qualification.
- Follow the application instructions. If the application indicates that you should apply online, please do so.
- Instead of attaching your cover letter and resume to your online application, we recommend you cut-and-paste it into the boxes provided.
- Apply before the deadline. Job postings are removed as soon as the application deadline passes and you will be unable to apply once this occurs.
- Keep a copy of the job posting for your files. You can either print out the posting, or access it online through the ‘My Job Cart’ option.
- If you apply online and do not receive a notification that we have your application within 48 hours, email uoft.careers@utoronto.ca to ensure it was successfully received.
