About U of T
U of T says it is an equity employer. What does that mean?
The University is committed to ensuring that the diversity of our staff, students and faculty reflects our local and global community. We are working to remove barriers to employment for people who are usually underrepresented in Canada's workforce – Aboriginal people, people with disabilities, visible minorities, sexual minorities and women. Our programs also ensure that employees at the University are treated with justice and fairness. For more information, please go to the equity section on our website.
Are all the jobs in downtown Toronto?
No. We have three campuses: St. George, in downtown Toronto; Mississauga, to the west of the city; and Scarborough, in the city's east end. Our career site regularly posts a wide variety of challenging jobs from all three campuses. For more information on the U of T campuses, you can also check our campus maps.
What kinds of jobs are available at U of T?
Professor, accountant, campus police constable, counselor, communications specialist, caretaker, operating engineer, sports coach, research officer, lab technician, writer, finance manager, electrician and IT specialist are only a few of the many job opportunities available at U of T.
If you are interested in a specific job at U of T, and you do not see that job posted today, please remember that what you see posted is only a snapshot of the types of jobs that we recruit for every year. Our staffing requirements vary; therefore we suggest that register a profile and select to receive job posting notifications via email or continue to visit the careers site for exciting new opportunities.
What do the different employment groups mean? Will I be in a union?
Depending on the duties and responsibilities associated with a position, an employee is classed in one of several employment groups, each of which is governed under a specific set of policies. Each of the University's union groups also has an individual collective agreement, and faculty and librarians have their own agreement and policies.
Over 80 per cent of the University's non-academic staff are unionized, including library workers, operating engineers, administrative and technical staff, police and skilled trades and services personnel. Non-unionized employees include research associates, professional/managerial staff, confidential administrative staff and ESL instructional staff. More information on the different staff groups can be found on our Staff site.
What does “appointment type” refer to?
Each job posting indicates how the position is funded and includes details about the position.
- Continuing Employees have no predetermined end date;
- Term Employees are hired for an initial appointment of at least six (6) months in length and have a predetermined end date;
- Part-time Employees have appointments based on less than 100 per cent of the full-time hours of work.
What kind of people are you looking for?
The University of Toronto takes pride in being part of one of the world's most multicultural cities. We look for qualified individuals who can contribute to the diversification of ideas within our community and are committed to our vision of being among the world's finest research-intensive universities in the world.
I saw a list of questions about equity. Do I have to answer? Will it affect my chance to get hired?
All questions to do with equity are voluntary and your answers are viewed only by U of T's Employment Equity Officer. Your answers are not accessible by any human resources staff or hiring managers and will not affect your employment application. We encourage you to answer the questions to help us to measure our progress in maintaining an equitable and diverse work environment.

Applying to U of T
How do I apply to U of T?
To apply for an administrative, academic, technical or service job at any of the three campuses, please check our online careers listing. You can apply for jobs online, except for those affiliated with CUPE 3261, which includes skilled trades and Facilities and Services positions such as caretaking, landscape technician and maintenance technician. The University does not accept unsolicited resumes, but we encourage you to register your profile with us.
Is applying online the only method I can use?
Yes. Please note that you must complete all pages in order for your application to be considered. Be sure to include all the fields that are marked with a red asterisk (*).
CUPE 3261 positions are the only exception. For these positions, please apply to the contact person indicated on the posting.
What is a career profile?
Creating your own online career profile allows you to store a copy of your resume online. You can indicate your overall career preferences and provide information on the type of work you're looking for and preferred work location.
Once complete, UTORecruit will then notify you by email of any specific openings matching your indicated preferences. Once you receive an email about a job posting, you'll need to check the career site to ensure that you're eligible to apply for the position. However, you won't need to worry about missing a job opportunity at U of T.
What are the benefits of posting a profile?
Completing a career profile can save time when you are applying to multiple jobs. The information you provide for your general candidate profile will automatically be transferred to other applications when you apply to a job on our website, which means you can avoid re-typing your information for each job application. We encourage you to review and update your profile to reflect the position to which you are applying.
Can I delete a profile I've submitted?
Please contact uoft.careers@utoronto.ca to have your profile removed. However, please be aware that if you delete your application, it will be removed from any jobs for which you are being considered.
How will I know if you received my application or profile?
All completed applications are automatically acknowledged by a confirmation email between 24 to 36 hours following submission. Regrettably, we are unable to respond to inquiries regarding the individual status of applications.
Should your qualifications meet the stated requirements of the posting for which you have applied, a member of our recruiting team or hiring manager will contact you. Given the volume of applications we receive, we regret that only those applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.
How do I review my application that I submitted online?

Attachments
What kind of files can I attach to my candidate record?
You can attach a copy of your resume if you wish to submit it along with your candidate record. We recommend that you attach only a generic resume as these attached files follow you on each application. If you prefer to tailor your resume for each application, you should copy-and-paste your resume into the text box provided.
If the position asks you to submit references and other materials, you can submit these documents with your application. Please note that the search tool that recruiters use to search for candidates will not be able to analyze the content of some attached files (mostly image files and zip compressed files).
Once you attach a file you are unable to go back and edit the document.
Can I attach my cover letter?
The University prefers that you provide your cover letter in plain text in the cover letter box provided.
What if I want to submit tailored resumes for each job that I am applying?
For each application, you may cut and paste your resume into the resume box provided. If you are copying and pasting from a Word document, you may lose your formatting.
If you choose to attach your specific resume, please save your attachment beginning with the naming convention of: FirstInitial LastName – Posting Number (e.g. J Doe – 0600083). If you have more than one resume attached, please specify the resume that you would like the recruiter and hiring manager to review for the position that you are applying in the “comments about the file” section.
NOTE: All attached files will be connected to future applications and there is a maximum of five attachments per candidate.
Can I delete my resume(s)?
You can delete some or all of the files. However, please note that if you delete a resume for a position that you applied for and are being currently being considered for, the hiring manager and recruiter will no longer have access to your resume.

I was sent a posting notification, but can't find the job. What's going on?
U of T believes strongly in promoting and developing its staff. One of the provisions of the collective agreement covering our largest employee groups is that some jobs are first listed internally to members of that union before they are available to others. It is possible that you have received a notification of a posting that is only available to members of specific U of T employment groups.
Before applying for position for which you have been sent a notification, please go to our career site and ensure that the posting is listed in the jobs section that matches your employment status (eg. USW, Internal, External). If you see the posting, you can apply online.
If you do not wish to receive further job posting notifications, you may unsubscribe. You can subscribe again while applying for a position or reviewing your profile.
I've asked to be notified of jobs at U of T, but have not received any notifications. Is there a problem?
If you have not received a notification of postings, it may be because your email information is not correct in the system. Please check your profile to ensure all of your contact information is accurate. Changes can be made directly in your profile. Also, if you have not made changes to your profile, or applied for any jobs for the year, the system will assume that your profile is inactive and stop sending automatic notifications. You must take some action on your profile at least once a year to ensure it remains active.
