Since 1990, the gap between the rich and the poor has increased in major cities across Canada.

Last month, a study produced by U of T School of Cities professor David Hulchanski and his research team showed that neighbourhood income inequality continues to grow in our city, and that discrimination, segregation and racial breakdowns are major culprits in this divide.

The results of this research reflect my experience working in public health and health services—that high levels of income disparity and intersections with racial discrimination are linked to lower levels of life expectancy and higher rates of teenage pregnancy, violence, imprisonment, mental illness, addiction and obesity. We need support for organizations that help address these broad determinants of health to assist those facing barriers in our community achieve the best possible outcomes.

The United Way of Greater Toronto supports a network of community agencies that work to create inclusive opportunities for those in need in our city. I hope you’ll join me in supporting efforts to effect positive and lasting change through a donation to the United Way.

Donate online or by cheque to the United Way of Greater Toronto using this webpage.

I would also like to invite you to consider purchasing a $10 lunch in the New College dining hall on Wednesday, November 7. Our U of T Food Services unit has kindly arranged for all proceeds to be directed to the United Way.

If you have any questions, please contact the U of T United Way Team at unitedway@utoronto.ca.

Thank you,
