Resignation
There are some important things to consider when resigning your employment from the University of Toronto. This checklist is designed to help ensure you have completed everything you need to do before and after you leave the University.Notice of resignation
You should provide notice of your intent to leave the University in writing to your supervisor/department head as early as possible. Ideally, the University would like a minimum 4 weeks of notice.Outstanding vacation days
Any outstanding vacation pay or days owing is normally paid with your final pay deposit.
Deposit of final paycheque
Your final paycheck is normally deposited on your regular pay day, so long as you provide sufficient notice of your intention to resign. In some cases, an adjustment may have to be made after the month of your final pay deposit.Benefits and Pension coverage
Life Insurance
If you are enrolled in the U of T Life Insurance Plan with Great West Life (GWL), you are covered for 30 days from the date of termination. You can contact GWL and arrange for conversion of coverage of up to $15,000 per year with no requirement for medical evidence of insurability within 30 days of your termination date. Long Term Disability
Coverage under the long term disability plan ceases as of the date of termination.Group Health and Dental plans
You are covered until the end of the month following the month in which your last contributions were deducted. You can contact Green Shield of Canada directly within 30 days of your date of termination to explore options for private coverage available. Call 416-601-0429 in the Toronto area or toll-free at 1-800-667-0429 for an information package. You must apply within 60 days of termination of your benefits from your Green Shield group program.
U of T Pension Plan
Within 60 days of your termination date, you should receive a pension options package from the University of Toronto Pension Services, outlining the various options available to you depending upon your age and length of pension service. If you are over the age of 55, you may be eligible for an immediate pension. You should review the options available and return the completed documents to the U of T Pension Services within 60 days of receiving the documents. Parking Permit
Permits must be returned directly to the Parking Office upon termination.Office keys, AMS access card
All property of the University, including office/building keys, AMS Secure ID access card, security passes should be returned to your supervisor on your final day of employmentEmail access
Email access normally ends on your final day of employment, as does voice mail access. If you have voice mail, you should provide your password to your supervisor so that they can change the message
Library privileges
Library privileges end with your employment. Please be sure to return your U of T library card to the library.
Forwarding Address
If you are moving, be sure to leave a forwarding address with your department business officer so that any information including your Tax slip will be sent to the correct location.
